SPECIAL NEED DORAL EVENTS

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December, aims to promote an understanding of disability issues, the rights of persons with disabilities and gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities. Established by the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982.

Helping our Special Needs

Our cry of Help for our Special Needs...

Donate your clothes to Special Needs

Fundainvidente for the last 5 months, we have been helping families in needs. They are in USA. with no documentation, no jobs but just the will of making a better lives for their families. We have provided them with Food, Clothes, Shoes, Furniture, and needs for babies, like strollers, cribs, playpens and pampers. This families do not received any benefits but our help. This families are blind and with Special Needs Children. The blue box show how we deliver our clothes, this was for 2 baby boys.

If you can help with items for babies, like high chairs, strollers, pampers, clothing, and food is very much needed.

A Courageous Doral Resident Fights for the Visually Impaired. Editor | July 8, 2012

When Luz Marina Rosenfeld, a Doral resident for over 24 years, lost her sight almost two years ago she felt her life was over. Even though she had her family’s support, with her husband of 30 years and three daughters, at first she was so devastated with her condition that she shut down for some months. Her doctor put her in contact with Miami Lighthouse, a nonprofit organization that provides rehabilitation services and programs for the blind or visually impaired to promote their independence. Virginia Jacko, Lighthouse’s CEO who is herself visually impaired, truly inspired her and “gave her the strength to continue in this difficult road of darkness”. Rosenfeld was invited to participate in “White Cane Day”, an annual fundraising activity, and due to her commitment and success in this event she was named speaker for this organization, a position she currently holds.
Luz Marina’s biggest challenge after losing her sight was to make people aware that she had the same rights as any citizen. “People act as if you were inferior, they think that you will stay home all day, they treat you with apprehension, or sometimes they don’t even consider you at all. As you lose your vision, you certainly lose a big part of yourself, what you have to do is start to replace that part with tools.” This is where Miami Lighthouse comes in, an inspirational campus of knowledge. With this organization her life changed from dark to light; she started to learn how to be independent, to fend for herself, to become useful and live her life like any other person.
Luz Marina says, “even though I cannot drive I have mobility through my legs and my guiding dog, a 4-year old golden retriever, Chelsea.” Rosenfeld adds that Chelsea has been vital to adapt to her hew life. “She goes with me wherever I go and although she has been fully trained as a service dog, I have to continuously reinforce and teach her”. Very proud Luz Marina says “Chelsea has been pivotal to me, she has even saved my life on occasions, when I would cross a street my dog would warn me of coming vehicles!”
Rosenfeld has also learned how to use special programs like JAWS (Job Access With Speech), a screen reading software that helps her communicate by reading emails and texts, as well as understanding Braille. Additionally she has mastered other daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, exercising (she loves to walk about Doral Park with Chelsea), getting around, and overall having personal management. At present she is studying massage therapy at Florida’s College of Natural Health.

Luz Marina’s commitment to her cause went even further; she wanted to help others with her same condition. She fought relentlessly to install ‘talking lights’, or audio pedestrian countdown timers, at some corners of our city. Currently these timers are in several crucial intersections (107th Ave and 41st St., 97th Ave. and 41st St. and 102nd Ave. and 52nd St.), however her goal is to expand their installation as well as the placement of special signs around the city. In addition Rosenfeld is trying to add more stops for Doral’s trolley route; at every community and at all the schools. For this project, Luz Marina has found support in Doral councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez, who has been a Miami Lighthousevolunteer for over 10 years.
Rodriguez first heard of Lighthouse through the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce when they helped renovate the center located in downtown. Ana Maria believes it is important to create a committee for visually impaired that will tend to the needs of people with this condition. This coming October Miami Lighthouse will host their annual “White Cane Day”. Together with Ana Maria, Rosenfeld will actively work for this fundraiser; both women are extremely committed to this organization.
Luz Marina feels that by becoming blind God blessed her because she lives happier than before; her mind just concentrates on the real important things of life. “Without faith in yourself, no work is ever possible, but with it one is amazed to find how many doors of opportunity will open.” One of her favorite thoughts is perseverance and self-confidence make everything possible. “Love life, life is beautiful, we just have to learn how to love it”.
Her way of giving back to Miami Lighthouse is by asking for support for this magnificent organization. Time or donations will help another blind person by providing the opportunity for them to build the necessary skills to regain independence.

Valiente residente de Doral lucha por los impedidos de la vista.

Luz Marina Rosenfeld, ha vivido en Doral por más de 24 años, pero cuando hace dos años perdió la vista sintió que se le había acabado la vida. A pesar de contar con el apoyo de su familia, su esposo de 30 años y sus tres hijas, se sintió desesperada y se encerró en sí misma un tiempo, hasta que su doctor la puso en contacto con Miami Lighthouse.
Miami Lighthouse es una organización sin fines de lucro que provee servicios y programas de rehabilitación para personas ciegas o con impedimentos de la vista y los ayudan a obtener su independencia. Virginia Jacko, la presidente de Miami Lighthouse, (quien a su vez es impedida de la vista) fue una verdadera inspiración para Rosenfeld y según comenta “le dio la fortaleza para continuar en este difícil camino de oscuridad”. Rosenfeld fue invitada a participar en un evento para recoger fondos llamado “White Cane Day” (Día del Bastón Blanco) y debido a su dedicación y compromiso con esta actividad fue nombrada vocera de esta organización, un puesto que en la actualidad desempeña.

El mayor reto de Luz Marina después de perder la vista fue el de concientizar a las personas a su alrededor sobre su igualdad de derechos como cualquier otro ciudadano. Así comenta, “La gente actúa como si uno fuera inferior, piensan que uno debe quedarse todo el día en casa, me tratan con aprensión, o me ignoran completamente. Al perder la vista es cierto que perdemos una gran parte de nosotros, lo que debemos hacer es reemplazar esa parte con herramientas”.
Luz Marina asegura que en este aspecto el Miami Lighthouse se ha convertido en “un recinto de conocimiento e inspiración”. Esta organización cambió su vida por completo, y Rosenfeld aprendió a ser independiente, a valerse por sí misma, a ser útil y poder vivir como cualquier otra persona. “Aunque yo no pueda manejar un automóvil, tengo movilidad a través de mis piernas y gracias a la ayuda de mi perra guía, Chelsea, una “golden retriever” que tiene 4 años”. Agrega Rosenfeld que su perra Chelsea ha sido vital en la adaptación a su nueva vida. “Ella va conmigo a todas partes y aunque está entrenada yo debo continuamente reforzarle y re-enseñarle aquello que ya domina”. Con orgullo Luz Marina señala “Chelsea ha sido esencial en mi vida, hasta me ha salvado cuando en ocasiones me disponía a cruzar la calle y ella me advertía de cualquier vehículo que viniera hacia nosotras!”
Rosenfeld también ha aprendido a utilizar programas especiales como JAWS (Job Access With Speech), que es un lector de pantallas que le permite comunicarse a través de sus correos electrónicos y leer con el manejo básico de Braille. Adicionalmente ha aprendido a dominar tareas fundamentales como cocinar, limpiar, hacer ejercicio (le encanta caminar por Doral Park con Chelsea), movilizarse y en general lograr su manejo personal. Actualmente está estudiando terapia de masajes en el Florida’s College of Natural Health.
El compromiso de Luz Marina con esta causa va mas allá de su logros personales. Ella sintió la necesidad de ayudar a otros que tuvieran su misma condición. Peleó sin tregua para que la ciudad instalara “semáforos que avisan” es decir, que tuvieran cronómetros electrónicos con audio para peatones. En este momento algunas esquinas cruciales de nuestra ciudad ya los tienen como lo son las intersecciones de la 107 Ave y 41 St., 97 Ave. y 41 St. y también la 102 Ave. y 52 St. Sin embargo su meta es expandir estas instalaciones a otros cruces, así como colocar señalización especial varios sitios de la ciudad. Asimismo Rosenfeld, está luchando para que el transporte público de Doral tenga más paradas, en cada comunidad y en todas las escuelas. Para este proyecto, Luz Marina ha conseguido el apoyo de la concejal de Doral, Ana María Rodríguez, quien ha trabajado de forma voluntaria para Miami Lighthouse por más de 10 años.
Rodríguez supo de Lighthouse a través de la Cámara de Comercio de Miami cuando éstos les ayudaron a renovar su centro. La concejal Ana María Rodriguez cree que es importante crear un comité para los impedidos de la vista que se encargue de atender las necesidades de todas las personas que tengan esta condición. Este próximo mes de octubre nuevamente se llevará a cabo el evento “White Cane Day”, y tanto Luz Marina como Ana María piensan comprometerse con este programa de creación de conciencia y de recaudación de fondos para esta extraordinaria organización.
Luz Marina siente que al perder la vista de alguna forma fue bendecida por Dios porque ahora vive mas feliz que antes; su mente se concentra en las cosas que son realmente importantes en su vida. Sin fé en uno mismo nada se puede, pero con fé es increíble ver cuántas oportunidades se abren. Unos de sus pensamientos favoritos es perseverancia y la confianza en sí mismo hacen que todo sea posible. “Debemos amar la vida, la vida es bella, sólo debemos aprender como amarla.”
La manera de poder devolverle al Miami Lighthouse todo lo que ha hecho por ella, es consiguiendo apoyo para esta maravillosa organización. Con dinero y horas de voluntariado se puede ayudar a otras personas que han perdido la vista y brindarles la oportunidad para obtener las habilidades necesarias para que puedan aspirar a ser independientes nuevamente.
